What is Google Discover and why it matters

Google Discover is a content recommendation feed in the Google mobile app and on google.com on mobile devices. Unlike search, the user isn't looking for anything — Google itself suggests content based on their interests and behavior.

For businesses this means: traffic without a search query. Someone reads an article about website redesign and sees your publication about design trends — with no search at all.

What influences appearing in Google Discover

1. Content quality and authority (E-E-A-T)

Google evaluates Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Content that demonstrates real experience is needed: case studies, specific numbers, authorship with name and photo.

2. Large quality image

Articles in Discover appear with a large horizontal image. Minimum 1200px wide. The image is what the user sees first. Without a quality image, chances are minimal.

3. Freshness and relevance

Discover favors new publications and content about current events and trends. Articles with a publication date rank better. Updating old articles can also give results.

4. Behavioral signals

If your content is read well in search (low bounce rate, long time on page) — Google shows it in Discover to a similar audience.

5. Core Web Vitals

Technical site quality is a mandatory requirement. A slow site won't get into Discover.

How to optimize content for Google Discover

  • Title 50–90 characters — specific, interesting, no clickbait
  • Photo 1200×628px minimum — quality, relevant, with max-image-preview: large
  • Publication date in markup — Schema.org Article with datePublished and dateModified
  • Authorship — name, photo, link to author page
  • Article structure — H2/H3 that answer specific questions
  • Internal links — link articles to each other

How to track traffic from Google Discover

Google Search Console → Performance → search type: Discover. There you can see which articles got impressions and clicks from Discover.

📊
Important: Discover traffic is uneven. An article can collect 10,000 views in a week and then stop. This is normal. The goal is to regularly publish quality content and increase chances of viral spikes.
